What to Bring to HYROX: The Race-Day Bag, and What the Rules Ban
What to bring to HYROX: ID, shoes, fuel and recovery kit, plus what the 2026/27 rulebook allows on course and what gets confiscated, like headphones.
Key takeaways
- Bring a government-issued photo ID and your registration confirmation. You need both to check in.
- On course you may wear knee sleeves, gloves (not grips), a weightlifting belt, wristbands and a hydration pack. Anything not on that list is prohibited by default.
- Headphones and phones are banned during the race. Only event chalk is allowed, and only at the sled pull and farmers carry.
- Any gels or food must be carried on you from the start, and anything you use or wear must stay with you from start to finish.
What to bring to HYROX comes down to two lists: what goes in your bag, and what’s allowed on the course. Get the second one wrong and you lose time or the item.
The rules below come from the HYROX Singles Rulebook 2026/27. The packing advice is ours. Product links are suggestions, not tested picks.
What to bring to HYROX: the bag
Check-in
- Government-issued photo ID and your registration confirmation. The rulebook says you need both.
- Your start wave and time. You must have your official start time clearly visible on your arm.
To race in
- Shoes you’ve trained in. Closed-toe shoes are required for the whole race. You may only take them off at the wall ball station once you reach your target. Our best HYROX shoes guide helps you choose.
- Race kit you’ve tested, plus spare socks.
- Anti-chafe balm and blister plasters. Eight runs and 100 m of lunges find every hot spot.

Fuel
- A water bottle and electrolytes for before and after. In dry Las Vegas air, electrolytes matter.
- Any gels you plan to use, in a pocket of your race kit. The rule: “Any racers desiring nutrition must carry it on their person from the start of the race.”
The Momentous Daily Hydration electrolytes are on our gear page, and code HYROXVEGAS applies automatically through our link. See which supplements are worth it in our supplements guide.

After the finish
- A warm layer, towel and change of clothes. Changing rooms and a secure bag drop are available, but the organiser accepts no responsibility for lost or stolen items. Leave valuables at home.
- Recovery slides for tired feet.

What you can wear on course
Section 10.1 of the rulebook permits only these:
| Allowed | Notes |
|---|---|
| Knee sleeves | Popular for lunges and wall balls |
| Gloves | Gloves yes, grips no |
| Weightlifting belt | |
| Wristbands | |
| Hydration pack | Handheld bottles aren’t on the list |
The big rule: “Any item not explicitly listed as permitted is, by default, prohibited.” And whatever you use, you must use it from start to finish. Handing gear to anyone mid-race risks disqualification for outside assistance.

What gets confiscated or penalised
- Headphones and cell phones are forbidden. Prohibited items are taken and can be collected at Customer Service after you finish. Medical devices that need a phone nearby require approval in advance.
- Your own chalk: only event chalk is allowed, and only at the sled pull and farmers carry. Using your own, or chalk anywhere else, is 2 minutes. Our sled pull guide explains why grip matters there.
- Drinks or food from anyone but the aid stations: 2 minutes per infringement. Your friends can cheer, not hand you a gel.
- Pouring water over yourself at an aid station: 2 minutes. Fluids are for drinking only.
- Dropping cups or gel wrappers on the course: 2 minutes.
- Not wearing your timing chip: a Did Not Start. The chip goes on your ankle, and your wristband must be visible on your wrist.
The rulebook doesn’t mention watches, so ask at check-in if you’re unsure. See our watch guide for setting one up for race day.
Water on course
Water is available at least once during, before or after each pass through the Roxzone, and sometimes a sports drink too. Most racers don’t need to carry anything. If you want more, a hydration pack is the only permitted way.
