Garmin Forerunner 970 Review for HYROX: Is the $749 Flagship Worth It?
A Garmin Forerunner 970 review for HYROX racers: $749 at launch, a flashlight, ECG and 15-day battery, how to set it up for a race and who should save money.
Key takeaways
- The Forerunner 970 launched at $749, $150 more than the 965 it replaced. TechRadar later listed it at $597.99 at Walmart, so check current prices.
- New over the 965: a built-in flashlight, a brighter sapphire display, a speaker and microphone, ECG and new running metrics like Running Tolerance.
- Garmin claims up to 15 days as a smartwatch and 26 hours of GPS. Both are less than the 965 as a smartwatch.
- For HYROX, the5krunner suggests a repeating multisport profile on higher-end Garmins like the 970.
The Garmin Forerunner 970 is Garmin’s top running watch, and it’s priced like one. For a HYROX racer, the question is whether you need the flagship or just a good lap button.

What’s new over the Forerunner 965
- A built-in flashlight, white and red. Handy for dark morning runs.
- A brighter display under sapphire glass.
- A speaker and microphone for calls and voice assistants.
- ECG, medically certified.
- New running metrics: Running Tolerance, Impact Load and, with the separate HRM-600 strap, Running Economy and Step Speed Loss.
The price went up $150, to “a staggering $749,” as DC Rainmaker put it.
What reviewers like
TechRadar’s Sarah Finley trained with it for more than nine months and said it “continues to raise the bar when it comes to training support.” She singled out Running Tolerance, which “gives you a clear picture of how much you can train,” plus better maps and the flashlight. In her testing, GPS battery lasted about two hours longer than the 965.
DC Rainmaker called it an evolutionary upgrade and rated Impact Load the most useful new feature.
The drawbacks
- Price. It’s one of the most expensive running watches, TechRadar notes.
- Battery trade-off. Smartwatch battery dropped from up to 23 days on the 965 to 15. Finley charged it more often than Garmin suggests in heavy training weeks.
- Some metrics need a chest strap. Running Economy and Step Speed Loss need the HRM-600, and DC Rainmaker found them the least useful.
- Launch bugs. DC Rainmaker hit crashes with the microphone and a navigation bug. Garmin updates its watches often, so check for fixes.
- No HYROX mode. Unlike the Amazfit Balance 3, there’s no built-in HYROX race mode.
Setting it up for HYROX
the5krunner suggests a repeating multisport profile on higher-end Garmins like the 970: an indoor run profile and a station profile that alternate. It also advises turning GPS off for the race and judging runs by lap time, since indoor distance is unreliable.
Simpler option: a cardio profile with GPS off, pressing lap at each station exit. Our best watch for HYROX guide covers all four setups.
Who should buy it, and who should save
Buy it if you run a lot of miles, want Garmin’s best training-load tools, and value the flashlight and display.
Save your money if you mainly need lap timing for race day. A cheaper Forerunner, or the Amazfit Balance 3 with its HYROX mode, covers that. Recovery-focused? Compare Whoop vs Garmin.

Quick answers
Is the Garmin Forerunner 970 good for HYROX?
Yes, if you want Garmin's top running watch. It handles lap timing, multisport profiles and training load. It has no dedicated HYROX mode, so you set up a profile yourself. If you only want lap timing, a cheaper watch does the job.
How much is the Garmin Forerunner 970?
It launched at $749.99 in May 2025. TechRadar listed it at $597.99 at Walmart in March 2026, so prices vary. Check the current price before you buy.
What is the battery life of the Forerunner 970?
Garmin claims up to 15 days as a smartwatch and up to 26 hours in GPS-only mode, per DC Rainmaker. Bright always-on display settings drain it faster.
Forerunner 970 or 965: what's the difference?
The 970 adds a flashlight, a brighter sapphire-covered display, a speaker and mic, ECG and new running metrics. The 965 had longer smartwatch battery life: up to 23 days versus 15.
