Key takeaways

  • Whoop is a screenless strap sold as a membership: $199, $239 or $359 a year. Garmin watches are a one-time purchase with no required subscription.
  • the5krunner found Whoop accurate worn on the biceps, but on the wrist it logged false Zone 5 heart rate in two HYROX sims.
  • Garmin gives you a screen, GPS and lap timing for race day. Whoop gives deeper recovery and strain coaching.
  • Many serious racers use both: a Garmin for sessions and racing, a Whoop for recovery.

Whoop vs Garmin is really a question about what you want: a coach that reads your recovery, or a watch that runs your session. Here’s how they compare for HYROX.

This comparison is based on published reviews and pricing, listed under Sources. We have not tested these devices ourselves. Prices were checked on October 25, 2026.

The short answer

  • Buy a Garmin if you want one device that times your runs and stations, shows your pace and tracks recovery well enough.
  • Buy a Whoop if you already own a watch and want the most detailed recovery and strain coaching.
  • Use both if you’re chasing a fast time and the budget allows.

Whoop: the recovery coach

Whoop is a screenless strap sold as a membership. Per Engadget:

  • One, $199 a year: recovery, strain and sleep tracking, a strength trainer, VO2 max estimates and an AI coach.
  • Peak, $239 a year: adds a health monitor, stress monitor and healthspan features.
  • Life, $359 a year: adds blood pressure insights, a heart screener and the medical-grade Whoop MG sensor.

Lifestack notes that new members must start on an annual plan.

What reviewers like: the5krunner calls Whoop 5.0 “the best recovery and strain coaching platform in sport tech” and scored it 86%. It praised the comfortable 24/7 fit and the AI coach.

The HYROX catch: in the same review, Whoop was accurate worn on the biceps, but on the wrist it showed false Zone 5 heart rate in two HYROX simulations, inflating strain. Burpees, wall balls and sled work are hard on any wrist sensor. Wear it on your upper arm for HYROX sessions.

Drawbacks: the subscription never ends, there’s no screen or GPS, and the5krunner found that no wearable correctly measures the strength side of training yet.

Garmin: the watch that runs your session

Garmin watches are yours to keep, with no required subscription. RepReturn uses the Forerunner 265 at $449 as its comparison and calls its HRV-based Training Readiness and Training Status “genuinely useful.”

For HYROX, a watch matters on race day. You press lap at every station so you can check each split against your pacing plan. Our best watch for HYROX guide explains why lap time beats GPS indoors and how to set up a Garmin for a race.

Drawbacks: recovery insight is solid but less detailed than Whoop’s, and the watch is one more thing on your wrist during burpees.

The cost over time

RepReturn did the maths: over three years, a Whoop membership costs about $597, against $449 for the Forerunner 265. At $239 or $359 a year, a Whoop Peak or Life membership costs more.

Which should you buy?

  • First HYROX, one device: a Garmin. Or the Amazfit Balance 3, which has a built-in HYROX mode. See our watch guide.
  • You already run with a watch: add a Whoop and wear it on your biceps.
  • Recovery is your limiter: Whoop, plus the basics. Sleep and fuel matter more than any score. Our supplements guide covers what’s worth taking.

Is Whoop accurate for HYROX?

the5krunner found it accurate on the biceps, but worn on the wrist it recorded false Zone 5 heart rate in two HYROX simulations. If you use Whoop for HYROX training, wear it on your upper arm.

Can you wear Whoop and Garmin together?

Yes. RepReturn suggests starting with a Garmin and adding Whoop later if you want deeper recovery data.
