Best Shoes for HYROX in 2026: Running Shoe, Trainer or Plated Racer?
The best shoes for HYROX balance 8 km of running with sled grip. How the PUMA HYROX racer, Velocity Nitro 4, Metcon 10 and Nano X5 compare, with prices.
Key takeaways
- Most of a HYROX race is running, so most racers are better served by a running shoe with grippy rubber than a stiff gym trainer.
- PUMA's Deviate Nitro Elite 4 HYROX is a carbon-plated racer with full-coverage grip for $260. The PUMA Velocity Nitro 4 is a $140 alternative without a plate.
- Gym trainers like the Nike Metcon 10 and Reebok Nano X5 are stable on sleds and lunges, but reviewers say they are not built for distance running.
- Prices checked October 23, 2026, from the reviews and listings in our sources. They change often.
The best shoes for HYROX are running shoes that don’t slip on the sled. Eight 1 km runs make up most of your race, so the shoe that runs well usually wins, as long as it grips.
This guide is based on published specs and reviews, listed under Sources. We have not tested these shoes ourselves. Prices were checked on October 23, 2026.
What makes a good HYROX shoe
- Running comfort first. You run 8 km in total, plus the Roxzone in between. A shoe that hurts at kilometre 5 costs more time than one that slips a little on the sled.
- Grip on carpet and turf. The sled push and pull is where smooth, thin rubber lets you down. Look for rubber across the whole sole.
- Stability for lunges and wall balls. A very tall, soft stack can feel wobbly under a sandbag. Guides from Hybrid Athlete Club and HyroxFitness both flag tall racing super shoes for this reason.
- Fit for a long day. HyroxFitness suggests going half a size up, since feet swell. Test it in a race simulation, not on race day.

PUMA Deviate Nitro Elite 4 HYROX: the race-day pick
PUMA built a HYROX version of its carbon racer. According to Gear Patrol, it costs $260, $10 more than the standard shoe, and keeps the same NitroFoam Elite midsole, carbon PwrPlate, 40 mm heel and 32 mm forefoot stack, and 8 mm drop.
The real change is underneath. PUMA redesigned the PumaGrip outsole with full coverage and beaded lugs for pavement, turf, rubber gym floors and stations.
Drawbacks: it’s the priciest shoe here, the stack is still tall for heavy lunges, and apart from the outsole and colours it’s the same shoe as the standard Elite 4. Gear Patrol’s piece was a launch announcement, not a wear test. PUMA is also HYROX’s official partner, so this shoe gets plenty of marketing. That’s a reason to compare, not a reason to buy.

PUMA Velocity Nitro 4: the value pick
If you’re racing your first HYROX, a good daily trainer covers your training and race day. Tom’s Guide lists the Velocity Nitro 4 at $140, 8.7 oz in a men’s US 10, with a 10 mm drop and a 36 mm/26 mm stack. The reviewer praised its responsive foam and excellent grip.
Drawbacks: it’s less stable than rival daily trainers, and the 10 mm drop won’t suit everyone.

Nike Metcon 10: for station-first racers
The Metcon is built for the gym floor: a wide, firm heel that stays planted on carries and lunges. Solefeed found listings from about $122 on sale to $174, and owners say it feels lighter than the Metcon 8 and 9.
Drawbacks: Solefeed scored it 6 out of 10 for running and HYROX, noting it’s fine for short intervals but not longer runs. Wide feet should try it on first.

Reebok Nano X5: maximum stability
TechRadar called the Nano X5 comfortable and very stable, at $150 RRP, with retailer listings as low as $99.99. It has a 7 mm drop and weighs 396 g (14 oz) in a US 11.
Drawbacks: the reviewer was blunt that “it’s not a running shoe.” At 14 oz, eight 1 km runs will feel long.

Which one should you buy?
- First HYROX, one pair of shoes: a daily running shoe like the Velocity Nitro 4.
- Chasing a fast time: a plated racer with full grip, like the Deviate Nitro Elite 4 HYROX. Do your sled sessions in it before race day.
- Stations are your weakness and you run slowly anyway: a Metcon or Nano gives a steadier base, at a cost on the runs.

Quick answers
What shoes are best for HYROX?
For most racers, a cushioned running shoe with good outsole grip. Racers chasing fast times often choose a plated racer with full rubber coverage, such as the PUMA Deviate Nitro Elite 4 HYROX. Gym trainers suit athletes who lose more time on the stations than on the runs.
Can you wear Metcons or Nanos for HYROX?
Yes, and they are stable on the sled and lunges. Reviewers say neither is built for distance running, so expect to give up comfort over the 8 km of runs.
Are carbon-plated shoes good for HYROX?
They help on the runs, but guides warn that tall stacks and thin outsole rubber can cost stability and grip on the sleds. PUMA's HYROX version adds full-coverage grip for that reason.
Should I size up for HYROX shoes?
HyroxFitness suggests going half a size up, since feet swell over a long race. Try both sizes in training before you decide.
