HYROX 2026/27 Rule Changes: What Every Racer Needs to Know
Doubles partners now have a 10-second limit, incomplete stations mean disqualification, and events can be ruled Out of Ranking. The 2026/27 HYROX rule changes in plain English.
Key takeaways
- The race format hasn't changed: 8 × 1 km runs and the same eight stations in the same order.
- Doubles partners must stay within 10 seconds of each other at the Roxzone timing points and reunite before starting a station.
- Failing to complete any station in full now results in disqualification.
- HYROX can declare an event or race day Out of Ranking, removing it from World Championship and Elite qualification and from world records.
If you’re racing HYROX Las Vegas in March, you’ll be racing under the 2026/27 rulebook. The good news is that the race itself hasn’t changed. The less good news is that several mistakes that used to cost you seconds can now end your race.
What hasn’t changed
The format is the same as ever: 8 × 1 km runs, each followed by the same eight stations in the same order. Weights and distances are covered in our station guide.
The changes that matter most
1. Doubles: the 10-second rule
The maximum gap between doubles partners is now 10 seconds, measured by the official timing equipment in the Roxzone. Partners also can’t start a station until they’ve reunited. If one of you is a much faster runner, the fast one now waits at the station entrance instead of starting the work.
What to do: Run together in training. Your race pace is the slower partner’s pace.
2. Incomplete station = disqualification
Failing to complete any station in its entirety now results in disqualification. Short reps, a shortened lunge lane or a missed wall ball target that you don’t make up can all count.
What to do: Listen to your judge. A no-rep you make up immediately costs seconds, while one you ignore can cost your result.
3. Sandbags, chalk and the start tunnel
Secondary sources report a set of smaller time penalties. A dropped sandbag reportedly costs time instead of an automatic disqualification. Only event-supplied chalk is allowed, with a reported +2 minutes per infringement. Lingering in the start tunnel after your wave goes reportedly costs +1 minute. These details come from summaries rather than the official rulebook, so confirm them before race day.
4. “Out of Ranking” events
Officials can now declare an event or race day Out of Ranking due to environmental, operational or safety conditions. Your result still stands, but it won’t count for World Championship qualification, Elite qualification or world records.
5. World Championship doubles partners are locked
If you qualify for the World Championships as a doubles team, you can’t substitute your partner, even for injury, and registrations aren’t transferable.
Elite-level changes
At the top of the sport, the Majors system has ended and a new Challenger 15 division has launched. The Elite license price rose to €499 with a weekly invitation system. Full details are in our Elite Series explainer.
The bottom line
Read the official 2026/27 rulebook on HYROX’s website before your race. Most of these changes reward one thing: clean, complete reps. That’s also the fastest way to race.
