World Triathlon and HYROX Sign Deal: Hybrid Racing Is on the Road to the Olympics
World Triathlon and HYROX signed a term sheet making Hybrid Racing an official discipline, with three formats and an Olympic goal. What changes for racers.
Key takeaways
- World Triathlon and HYROX signed a term sheet on October 28, 2026 that makes Hybrid Racing a recognised World Triathlon discipline.
- World Triathlon will sanction three formats: Ultimate (today's HYROX race), Fast (shorter and more intense) and Ultra (longer, endurance-based).
- HYROX will be the exclusive operator of the official elite World, Continental and National Championships in the Ultimate format.
- The stated goal is Multi-Sport Games first, then the Olympic and Paralympic Games. No dates have been announced, and a full agreement is still to come.
HYROX just took its biggest step yet toward the Olympics. On October 28, 2026, World Triathlon and HYROX announced they had signed a term sheet that makes Hybrid Racing a recognised discipline within the World Triathlon family.
“Hybrid Racing is no longer just a global fitness movement, it is officially on the road to the Olympics,” said HYROX co-founder and CEO Christian Toetzke.
What World Triathlon and HYROX agreed
According to World Triathlon’s announcement:
- Hybrid Racing becomes an official discipline. It combines running with functional fitness, and World Triathlon will sanction and govern it.
- Three formats, all developed with HYROX:
| Format | What it is |
|---|---|
| Ultimate | Mirrors the existing HYROX race: 8 × 1 km runs and 8 stations |
| Fast | A shorter, higher-intensity version |
| Ultra | An extended, endurance-based format |
- HYROX runs the elite championships. It will be the exclusive operator of the official World, Continental and National Championships for elite athletes in the Ultimate format.
- National Federations can host races. Triathlon federations can organise Hybrid Racing events in all three formats, including Age Group National Championships.
- The Olympic goal. The two will work toward Multi-Sport Games, with “the ultimate ambition to gain inclusion into the Olympic and Paralympic Games.”
World Triathlon hasn’t published distances or stations for Fast and Ultra yet. We’ll update this story when it does.
What they said
“This agreement is the result of a full year of dedicated work between World Triathlon and HYROX,” said World Triathlon President Antonio F. Arimany. He said it will “open genuine new opportunities for every one of our National Federations to grow participation.”
Co-founder and CMO Moritz Fürste said: “Having lived the Olympic dream twice as an athlete, I know firsthand what it means to step onto that stage.” He added: “We are paving the way for an entire generation of hybrid racers to chase their own Olympic dream.”
How we got here
This didn’t come out of nowhere. At its congress in Wollongong, Australia, in October 2025, World Triathlon voted to bring fitness racing under its umbrella, Inspired by Sports reported. It also reported that LA 2028 is not on the table.
Brisbane 2032 is the date most often mentioned. Fürste told Reuters last week that the Olympics were a goal, possibly for 2032, but asked: “Is it super likely? I don’t know.” Our business of HYROX story covers the ownership deal and sponsors behind the push.
What’s still unknown
The term sheet is a first step. A Long Form Agreement will follow, setting out “the full operational, governance and commercial framework.” Until it’s published, there are no answers on:
- the exact Fast and Ultra formats
- when federation-run races or Age Group National Championships start
- how this fits with the Elite 15 series and the new Challenger division
- any Olympic or Multi-Sport Games date
What it means for you
- Your race doesn’t change yet. HYROX races, including HYROX Las Vegas, run under the current 2026/27 rulebook.
- More ways to race are coming. Fast and Ultra formats, plus federation-run Age Group National Championships, mean more racing options over time.
- The sport keeps growing. HYROX expects about 2.2 million racers this season, Fürste told Reuters. Read more in our HYROX and XENOM story, and sign up early for races near you with our 2026/27 season guide.
