HYROX Malaysia Drops Carlsberg After Ministry Blocks Kuala Lumpur Race Approval

Key takeaways
- Malaysia's Youth and Sports Minister said the ministry would not approve HYROX Kuala Lumpur 2026 unless the alcohol sponsor fully withdrew.
- HYROX Malaysia apologised, said 'We got this wrong,' and confirmed Carlsberg will not be a partner of the Kuala Lumpur race.
- The race is still set for December 10–13, 2026 at MITEC. The organiser's licence application was still under review as of November 4.
- Malaysia's Safe Sport Code bars alcohol, tobacco and e-cigarette companies from sponsoring or advertising sport the ministry sanctions.
HYROX’s Kuala Lumpur race has lost its beer sponsor five weeks before the race. Malaysia’s sports ministry said it would not approve the event while an alcohol brand was attached, and HYROX Malaysia apologised and dropped Carlsberg from the race.
What happened
A poster for HYROX Kuala Lumpur 2026 listed an “Official Beer Partner,” according to Free Malaysia Today. On November 4, Youth and Sports Minister Dr Taufiq Johari said the organiser’s application was still being processed, and set a clear condition:
“We will not approve the event unless the alcoholic beverage company fully withdraws its sponsorship.”
The ministry said that means removing the company’s logos, trademarks and promotional material from official event channels and from the venue. It also said it has not funded the race.
The same day, Malay Mail reported HYROX Malaysia’s response. It said a regional announcement naming Carlsberg as a partner had caused concern and offence, and that it would not extend the partnership to the Kuala Lumpur race:
“We got this wrong, and we take responsibility for that.”
HYROX Malaysia said the decision was made together with Carlsberg, and told racers it recognised their training and looked forward to seeing them at the start line.
The rules behind it
| Rule | What it says, per the ministry |
|---|---|
| Safe Sport Code, Article 5.2 (3rd edition, 2024) | Alcohol, tobacco and e-cigarette companies can’t sponsor or advertise at ministry-sanctioned sport |
| Sports Development Act 1997, Section 36(1) | Running a sports event without a licence from the Commissioner of Sports is an offence |
| Penalty under the Act | A fine of RM50,000 to RM500,000, up to five years in prison, or both |
“The ministry will not compromise in ensuring a safe and healthy sports environment for all participants,” the minister said, per Malay Mail. He added that the rules apply equally to every organiser and company in these industries, regardless of brand or audience.

Why it matters beyond Malaysia
HYROX’s Asian races have made news several times this autumn. A Macau group used the HYROX name for a lookalike race HYROX hasn’t authorised, and a racer incident at HYROX Beijing led to a new rule that lets a race director pull you from the course. Now a sponsorship deal has run into national sports law.
HYROX signs sponsors globally, from PUMA through 2030 to BOSS Parfums, as our business of HYROX explainer covers. But what a sponsor can do differs by country, and in Malaysia alcohol brands can’t sponsor sport the ministry sanctions.

Quick answers
Is HYROX Kuala Lumpur 2026 still happening?
It is still scheduled for December 10–13, 2026 at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC). HYROX Malaysia told racers it looks forward to seeing them at the start line, but the ministry said on November 4 that the licence application was still being processed.
Why did HYROX Malaysia drop Carlsberg?
Malaysia's Youth and Sports Ministry said it would not approve the event unless the alcohol sponsor fully withdrew, including removing its logos and promotional material. HYROX Malaysia then apologised and said Carlsberg would not be a partner of the Kuala Lumpur race.
Can alcohol brands sponsor sport in Malaysia?
Not at ministry-sanctioned events. Malaysia's Safe Sport Code bars alcohol, tobacco and e-cigarette companies from organising, sponsoring, promoting or advertising those sports activities.
