Best Wall Ball for HYROX: The Official Ball, Budget Picks and the Right Weight
The best wall ball for HYROX training at home: the official Centr x HYROX ball, cheaper soft-shell options, which weight to buy and what to avoid.
Key takeaways
- Buy the weight for your division: 4 kg for Open women, 6 kg for Open men and Pro women, 9 kg for Pro men.
- Get a soft-shell wall ball you can catch off the wall, not a hard medicine ball or a slam ball.
- The official Centr x HYROX Competition Wall Ball costs $99 (4 kg), $109 (6 kg) or $121 (9 kg) on Centr's US site, with a five-year consumer warranty.
- A cheaper soft-shell ball at the same weight is enough for most home training. Mark your race target height on the wall.
The wall ball is the last station of every HYROX race, and 100 reps on tired legs is where a lot of finish times slip. Training it at home is simple. You need one ball at the right weight, and a wall.
This guide is based on manufacturer pages and published reviews, listed under Sources. We have not tested these balls ourselves. Prices were checked on October 28, 2026.
Step 1: buy the right weight
| Division | Ball | Target |
|---|---|---|
| Open women | 4 kg | 2.7 m |
| Open men | 6 kg | 3 m |
| Pro women | 6 kg | 2.7 m |
| Pro men | 9 kg | 3 m |
Weights and targets are from our wall balls guide, which follows the HYROX rulebook. Doubles partners in different divisions may need two balls. Check the 2026/27 rule changes before you race.
Step 2: get a soft shell
A wall ball isn’t just a heavy ball. It has a softer shell built to be caught off a wall again and again. HYROX Runners puts it plainly: “Get a soft-shell ball, not a slam ball, it needs to be catchable off the wall.”
Smaller, harder medicine balls are fine for core work and throws. Fittux says they should be “extra conditioning, not your main race-specific wall ball.”
The official pick: Centr x HYROX Competition Wall Ball
Centr describes itself as the Official Equipment Provider of HYROX and sells the ball used for HYROX competition.
| Centr x HYROX Competition Wall Ball | |
|---|---|
| Competition weights | 4, 6 and 9 kg |
| Training weights | 2 and 12 kg |
| US price | $99 (4 kg), $109 (6 kg), $121 (9 kg) |
| Size | 35.5 cm (14 in) |
| Shell | PVC, double-stitched seams |
| Warranty | 5 years consumer, 2 years studio or commercial |
Why buy it: you train with the same ball you’ll catch on race day. Yahoo Health’s reviewer, a certified strength coach, liked its “soft, grippy PVC surface” and “durable double stitching.”
The catch: price. The same reviewer’s one con was “Expensive,” and she noted she hadn’t used it long enough to judge durability. When we checked, the product page also showed it out of stock, so availability may vary.
Cheaper soft-shell options
For most home training, a well-made soft-shell ball at the right weight does the job. HYROX Runners notes that budget balls can cost about a third of the branded competition balls.
- Best overall, per Fittux: Yes4All Dynamic Wall Ball. Fittux calls it “the best overall wall ball because it covers the job most people are buying for,” a soft ball rather than “a hard little core ball.”
- Best budget, per Fittux: Phoenix Fitness Wall Ball. A simple route for beginners, though budget balls “may not feel as refined” as pricier ones.
- Already have a medicine ball? Keep it for core work, but buy a soft-shell wall ball for race reps.

Buying tip: many US listings use pounds. 4 kg is about 9 lb, 6 kg about 13 lb and 9 kg about 20 lb. Check the exact weight before you buy.
What to look for
- The exact race weight, in kilograms if you can find it.
- A soft, grippy shell that won’t sting your hands on the catch.
- Double-stitched seams. Seams are what fail first under high-rep throws.
- A size you can hold to your chest in a full squat.
Set up your wall
- Mark the target. Put tape at 2.7 m or 3 m. Training to a lower mark makes race day feel heavier. HYROX Runners suggests marking the target with tape.
- Use a solid wall with clear floor around it, and check that throwing a ball against it is OK where you live.
- Protect the floor with a mat if you squat over a hard surface.

How to train with it
Our pacing guide targets 5:22 for 100 wall balls in a 1:15 finish and 8:35 in a 2:00 finish. To get there:
- Do the reps in sets. Pick a set size you can repeat, like 20s or 25s, and keep the rests short.
- Train them tired. Run 1 km, then do 50 to 100 wall balls. That’s how the race ends.
- Drill technique. Our wall balls guide covers depth, the catch and the no-rep rules.

Quick answers
What weight wall ball do I need for HYROX?
4 kg for Open women, 6 kg for Open men and Pro women, and 9 kg for Pro men. Check the current rulebook before you race.
What wall ball does HYROX use?
Centr calls itself the Official Equipment Provider of HYROX and sells the Centr x HYROX Competition Wall Ball in 4, 6 and 9 kg competition weights. It lists the ball at 35.5 cm (14 in) with a double-stitched PVC shell.
Is a medicine ball the same as a wall ball?
Not quite. Wall balls have a softer shell and are made to be caught off a wall. Many medicine balls are smaller and harder, which is fine for core work but not ideal for 100 race-style reps.
Can I use a slam ball for wall balls?
No. HYROX Runners says to get a soft-shell ball, not a slam ball, because it has to be catchable off the wall.
