HYROX Home Gym: What to Buy for All 8 Stations (and What to Skip)
How to train every HYROX station at home: the ergs, sleds, kettlebells, sandbag and wall ball worth buying, with brand-listed prices and substitutes.
Key takeaways
- Concept2 makes the RowErg and SkiErg used at every HYROX race. Concept2 lists them from $990 and $850.
- A sled is the hardest station to replicate at home. REP's pull-only sled is $114.99; Torque's magnetic TANK sleds start at $799.
- Buy race-weight kettlebells, sandbag and wall ball for your division first. They are cheap and train four stations.
- Skip a machine if you have a gym nearby that has it. Spend first on what you'll use every week.
You can train all eight HYROX stations without a commercial gym. The trick is buying in the right order, because the cheapest gear trains the most stations.
This guide uses brand-listed prices and specs (see Sources). We have not tested this equipment ourselves, and prices change, so check before you buy.
Start here: the cheap stuff that covers four stations
Buy these at your division’s race weight (see our station weights):
- Kettlebells for the farmers carry: 2 × 16 kg (Open women), 2 × 24 kg (Open men, Pro women) or 2 × 32 kg (Pro men).
- Sandbag for the lunges: 10 kg, 20 kg or 30 kg depending on division. An adjustable bag covers more than one.
- Wall ball: 4 kg, 6 kg or 9 kg, thrown to a 2.7 m or 3 m target.
- Burpee broad jumps: no equipment. Just floor space.
These four items train half the race, and they are the ones you’ll use every week. Our wall ball guide has set plans for all 100 reps.

The ergs: buy the race machines
HYROX races use Concept2 machines. Concept2 says it has worked with HYROX since the start and that the RowErg and SkiErg are part of every race.
| Machine | Station | Concept2 list price |
|---|---|---|
| SkiErg | Station 1, 1,000 m | From $850 |
| RowErg | Station 5, 1,000 m | From $990 |
Training on the same monitor you’ll race on helps with pacing. If budget allows only one, think about which station costs you more time. A gym with both may be the better first step.
The sled: the hardest station to copy at home
Race sleds are heavy (152 kg push for Open men, including the sled) and need the right floor. Your options:
- Pull sled, plates loaded: REP’s Pull Sled is $114.99, weighs 29 lb and is pull only. It trains the rope-pull station on grass or a car park.
- Push-pull sled: REP says its push-pull sleds suit turf or concrete. Check that your surface can take it.
- Magnetic sled: Torque’s TANK uses magnetic resistance on wheels, so it works on most surfaces without plates. Prices start at $799 (M1) and run to $1,799 for the M3 and M4.
The TANK is not the sled HYROX races use, so treat it as a strength tool rather than a race simulator. Our sled push guide covers technique.
What to skip
- A treadmill, if you can run outside. HYROX runs are 1 km repeats; a track or road works fine.
- Machines you can use at a gym once a week. Spend first on the gear you’ll touch every session.
Build order we’d follow
- Kettlebells, sandbag and wall ball at race weight.
- A sled that fits your space and surface.
- The Concept2 erg for your weaker station.
- The second erg.

Quick answers
What equipment do I need for HYROX at home?
To cover every station: a SkiErg and RowErg (or gym access), a sled, kettlebells at your carry weight, a sandbag at your lunge weight and a wall ball at your division's weight. Burpee broad jumps and running need no equipment.
What is the cheapest way to train the HYROX sled at home?
A pull sled loaded with weight plates. REP lists its Pull Sled at $114.99. For pushing, you need a push-pull sled and a surface like turf or concrete, or a magnetic sled such as Torque's TANK.
Which rower does HYROX use?
The Concept2 RowErg, and the Concept2 SkiErg for the ski station. Concept2 has been a HYROX partner since the start.
