Sauna for HYROX: What the Research Says, and Is a Backyard Sauna Worth It?
Sauna for HYROX: two studies of runners found post-workout sauna boosted endurance. The protocol they used, safety basics and backyard sauna options.
Key takeaways
- In a 2007 study of six male distance runners, about three weeks of post-run sauna raised run time to exhaustion by 32%, estimated at about a 1.9% faster time trial.
- A 2020 study of 20 trained runners found about 28-minute post-run sauna sessions, 3 times a week, improved heat tolerance and fitness markers after 3 weeks.
- Both protocols used the sauna straight after training. Both studies were small, so treat the results as promising, not proven.
- Sweaty Yeti's backyard saunas start at $29,700, and its Sauna Fit pairs a sauna with a workout room from $47,200.
A sauna for HYROX isn’t just a place to relax. Two studies of runners suggest that sitting in the heat after training can make you fitter. If you train through a Las Vegas summer, better heat tolerance is a bonus.
Here’s what the research found, how to use it, and what a backyard sauna costs. We haven’t tested these saunas. Prices are from the maker’s product pages, checked on October 29, 2026.
What the research says about sauna for endurance
Study 1: competitive runners, 2007. Six male distance runners sat in a humid sauna at about 90°C for about 31 minutes straight after training, around 13 times over 3 weeks. Compared with normal training, their run time to exhaustion rose 32%, which the researchers estimated as about a 1.9% faster time trial. Plasma volume rose 7.1%, and they credited the gain mainly to more blood volume (Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport).
Study 2: trained runners, 2020. Twenty middle-distance and cross-country runners, 13 of them women, used a dry sauna at 101 to 108°C for about 28 minutes, within 5 minutes of training, about 3 times a week. After 3 weeks, compared with runners who didn’t use the sauna, they had (European Journal of Applied Physiology):
| Measure | Sauna group vs. no sauna |
|---|---|
| VO2 max | Up about 8%, vs. about 2% |
| Time to exhaustion | Up about 12%, vs. about −1% |
| Peak heart rate in a hot run | 11 bpm lower |
| Peak core temperature in a hot run | 0.2°C lower |
The authors called it “an effective and pragmatic method of heat acclimation.” Going on to 7 weeks added little.
The caveats. Both studies were small. The 2020 groups were self-selected, not randomised, and half the participants dropped out, mostly through training injuries. Neither study tested HYROX. Treat sauna as a promising extra, not a shortcut.
A sauna protocol for HYROX training
Based on those two studies:
- Go straight after training, not before.
- Build up to 25 to 30 minutes, starting shorter.
- 2 to 3 sessions a week for 3 weeks is what both studies used.
- Time it before a hot race, or the Vegas summer. Our desert heat guide covers training outside.
Safety first. Get out if you feel dizzy, sick or faint. Rehydrate afterwards, ideally with electrolytes. Skip alcohol. If you have a heart condition, low blood pressure, are pregnant or take medication, check with your doctor before using a sauna.

Cheaper ways to get the heat
- A gym or spa sauna. Most of the protocol works anywhere, as long as you can get in right after training.
- Smaller home saunas. Barrel saunas and indoor infrared units sell for far less. Check heat and size: the studies used traditional saunas at 90 to 108°C, and infrared units usually run cooler.

What it means for you
- Sauna is an extra, not the plan. Runs, stations and sleep come first. Our 12-week blueprint sets the base.
- Time it right. Three weeks of post-workout sauna before a big race is what the research tested.
- Recovery is a system. Compare sauna with foam rollers, massage guns and compression boots in our recovery tools guide, or build out your HYROX home gym.

Quick answers
Is sauna good for HYROX training?
Two small studies of runners suggest it can help. Post-workout sauna for about 30 minutes, a few times a week for three weeks, improved endurance and heat tolerance. The studies were small, so the effect isn't proven for HYROX itself.
Should I use the sauna before or after a workout?
The studies used it after training: within about 5 minutes in the 2020 study and immediately after in the 2007 study.
How long should I stay in the sauna after training?
The studies averaged about 28 to 31 minutes. Build up to that gradually, leave if you feel dizzy or unwell, and rehydrate afterwards.
How much does a Sweaty Yeti sauna cost?
On October 29, 2026, the Sweaty Yeti Sauna started at $29,700, the Sauna Plus at $46,400, the Sauna Max at $46,900, the Sauna Fit at $47,200 and the Sauna Plunge at $51,700. Delivery within 250 miles is included.
